If your laptop has a DVI or HDMI port, use that to connect to your LCD TV (DVI-to-HDMI cable or standard HDMI cable, whichever connecter your laptop has). BTW there is no difference in image quality between DVI and HDMI. HDMI is merely DVI + audio all in one cable.
If your laptop only has VGA, then you should use a standard VGA monitor cable to connect it to the VGA on your LCD TV.
DO NOT USE S-VIDEO IF EITHER DVI/HDMI OR VGA IS AVAILABLE. S-Video is the poorest way, because it jumbles all of the video signal's color data into one channel called Chroma. VGA is better because it separates the colors into three separate channels (Red, Green and Blue) for much better image quality. Not sure why the first guy thinks S-Video is better.. It is absolutely NOT.

Make sure that your TV has been set onto Computer mode. Press the AV button on the remote until you are connected to the computer. If this doesn't resolve the issue then, you may need to configure your graphic properties on your laptop to set up the TV as your primary monitor. Configuration is different depending on the graphic card drivers you have installed. Cheers
